Learning the Art of Quilting

Quilting Tips for Beginners

Quilting is an age old tradition that started in the middle ages. Historians have put in writing that quilts were made for warriors as clothing for the cold weather. Fabrics were layered then stitched as insulation to keep the warriors warm during the cold and windy seasons. Quilting has been here for centuries and the appreciation for the craft still goes on.

During the early times, quilting was just considered a form of clothing that is good during the cold winters. There were no elaborate designs and patterns. And the men were believed to be the quilters who made the clothing. Quilts were usually made by hand just like the early forms of clothing.

Nowadays, quilting is done by both men and women. It is a craft that millions of people love. It is also an art since elaborate designs, patterns, fabrics and usage have emerged for quilts.

Quilt shops and specialty craft stores are now part of larger department stores specially dedicated to quilting lovers. Local quilting stores can be found in many areas as well. Then there are an array of online quilt kit websites and online shops.

For the more traditional type of quilters, quilting by hand is still the best way to do it. Dedication and patience is important from planning, to fabric selection, to the actual quilting.

For the contemporary and modern quilters, time is of the essence. The use of quilting machines or regular sewing machines is important to achieve the desired design, pattern and deadline.
